artist statement:
This collection of paintings was an inspiration courtesy of "Une semaine de bonte", artist Max Ernst. Instead of collage, the collages I created became the artist models for visual "inventions" painted on boards.
The Story:
They hide away behind forests of test tubes, specimens and instruments. They simmer with the knowledge of the unknown struggling to be free and be present. When success takes too long they erupt in anger. They create monsters and their monsters beget more monsters. They are the Mad Scientists, and each portrait inside is a visual performance of a mysterious life. This is a family of doctors, three men, three women, who mocked the laws of nature, rejected proven theories, and through science, imagination and obsession, evolved nature into the impossible. It is a terrifying power, turmoil engulfs them, and woe to all who stand in their way, but their gift to humanity is that of newborn science. In the end, the price they paid was their own sanity.
